Eleven

Solé shouted as gunshots rang out. “You still wanna know?”

A gun was trained her way, giving Celine a chance to take fire. She did, letting off three rounds. When he fell, the man behind him dropped, then rolled and let off two shots in Celine’s direction. Solé covered her, and then together, they rose again and took weapons off the fallen men.

“You know there’s more of them, right?” Celine said.

“Of course. I’ve been watching them for days now. Remember?”

Celine stared at her for a minute. “Let’s go, and if you’re going to help, keep up.”

Solé pursed her lips and rolled her eyes. The screen door slammed as they exited, and a truck moving in their direction made them crouch and run to hide on the side of the house. They were concealed behind overgrown grass as they watched and waited, knowing once the men discovered their crew inside dead, they would immediately call in for reinforcements.

That’s not what they needed.

“I counted five,” Solé said.

“There’s six. He’s the one that stays behind to watch for trouble.”

Solé peered. “I don’t think so.”

Three of the men jumped out and strolled to the front door.

“We need a distraction,” Celine said.

Solé stood and walked out of the grass, a smile on her face and the guns in her hands hidden as she eased her hands behind her back.

“What the fuck,” Celine cursed.

The three men turned to her and lifted their weapons.

“Whoa, pretty girl, you can’t just walk up on us like that,” one man said, a twinkle in his eyes as he looked over Solé’s curves in the spaghetti top and skinny jeans.

“Yeah, where the fuck yo’ pretty ass come from anyway?” asked a second man who walked up beside her.

He and the fifth guy had left the truck, and together, they stood in front of Solé, not knowing whether to kill her or invite her back to their spot for a nightcap.

“Come on, get your ass out of the truck,” Celine whispered, convinced there was a sixth person.

A second passed, then another, and when Solé raised her weapons, she pointed the barrels in the guys’ faces on her left and right. It was then that the sixth man exited, which happened not to be a man at all.

There was a weapon in her hand.

“I wouldn’t try that if I were you,” she said, and a second later, the gun was shot from her grip as Celine sent a bullet flying through her palm.

“Ahhhhh!”

The men quickly turned to the field, and Celine let off more rounds.

Phi! Phi! Phi!

The two men left standing aimed at her.

Pop! Pop!

They hit the ground as smoke dispersed from Solé’s barrel. She pivoted in time to see Celine run from the side of the house to the truck. Meeting her there, Solé opened the passenger door as Celine hopped into the front seat.

“If you must know where the gun came from,” Solé said as she climbed inside, “I had it hidden. I’m not dumb enough to carry just one, and when you woke up and took my gun, I had to defend myself.
